Cheaha State Park
Located in Clay and Cleburne Counties, Cheaha State Park is the pinnacle of natural beauty and awe in Alabama. Surrounded by the Talladega National Forest, this foothill of the Appalachian Mountains holds the reputation of the highest point in Alabama. Standing 2,407 ft. above sea level, it is no wonder why the local Creek Indians named this place “Chaha,” meaning high place.
Chief Ladiga Trail
Provides Alabama with its first extended rails-to-trails project. It wanders 33 miles through the countryside of Calhoun and Cleburne counties. Loyd Owens Canoe Trail
Provides a 40-mile, five boat-ramp canoe trail along Cleburne County's Tallapoosa River. It is one of the county's newest attractions. For more information, please contact the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association at (334) 704-0708 or (256) 239-6399
Talladega Scenic Drive
Provides a 29-mile "bird's eye view" of Northeast Alabama along State Scenic Highway 281. It eventually connects to U.S. Highway 78. Along the way, the Cheaha State Park, Pinhoti National Recreation Trail, Cheaha Wilderness, Oxford-Cheaha Road, and Turnipseed Hunt Camp can all be accessed directly from the drive. Coleman Lake Recreation Area
(in the Talladega National Forest)
Provides electricity, water hook-ups, warm-water showers, swimming/beach area, picnic area, 21-acre lake, and access to the Pinhoti Trail to campers and outdoor enthusiasts. For more information, please contact the Shoal Creek Ranger District of the Talladega National Forest at (256) 463-2272.
Pine Glen Recreation Area
(in the Talladega National Forest)
Provides a more primitive camp and had access to the Pinhoti Trail. It is favored by hunters because of it is centrally located in the Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area. For more information, please contact the Shoal Creek Ranger District of the Talladega National Forest at (256) 463-2272.
Warden Station Hunter/Horse Camp
(in the Talladega National Forest)
Located along Forest Service Road 500, near Coleman Lake Recreation Area. Its central location is convenient for both hunters and horse users. Camping spurs, water, and restrooms are provided. Tallapoosa River
Provides fishing, canoe trail, and boat-ramp access In Cleburne County to the public. It flows through the Sunrise Region and includes Lake Wedowee/R. L. Harris Reservoir and Lake Martin (together claiming 50,000 acres of water).
